Willkie adds partner to asset management practice in Washington

Willkie Farr & Gallagher has appointed Marvin (Chip) C Lunde, III as a partner in the firm's Asset Management Group in Washington.

Lunde advises insurance companies, investment companies, investment company boards, investment advisers and broker-dealers on federal and state securities and insurance compliance and regulatory matters. Lunde was previously a shareholder at Carlton Fields, where he served as co-chair of the firm's Securities and Investment Companies Industry Group.

“Chip is a talented and accomplished practitioner who is highly respected in the investment management community,” says Margery Neale, Chair of Willkie’s Asset Management Group. “Chip’s focus on financial products at the intersection of securities and insurance regulation augments Willkie’s world-class asset management practice. We are pleased to welcome him to the firm.”

Lunde focuses his practice on securities and insurance regulations governing the development, registration, distribution, and marketing of insurance, annuity, mutual fund, and other financial products. He regularly counsels issuers on the creation of novel financial products and the status of insurance products as securities. He also advises financial services clients regarding the development and regulation of other pooled investment vehicles, counsels investment company boards, advises on contracts between financial product issuers and their service providers, and advises mutual funds on credit agreements and derivatives regulatory matters.

Additionally, Lunde advises financial services clients on issues pertaining to the sales practices, market conduct, and other compliance issues affecting issuers and distributors of financial products.

“Willkie’s insurance transactional practice has been exceptionally busy this year, serving as lead counsel in many of the largest insurance US M&A deals announced so far in 2020,” says Alexander Dye, Co-Chair of the firm’s Insurance Transactional and Regulatory Practice Group. “Chip’s representation of insurance companies on compliance and regulatory matters, including with respect to the design and distribution of insurance products, will be a tremendous asset to our interdisciplinary insurance practice, which includes transactional, regulatory and litigation matters.”

“Willkie’s market-leading capabilities in asset management and insurance complement my practice, which sits at the intersection of both areas,” says Lunde. “I am delighted to join this accomplished team.”
Lunde is actively involved in industry organisations, and is currently a member of the Association of Life Insurance Counsel, Federal Bar Association and Insured Retirement Institute, where he serves on the Regulatory Affairs Committee. He is a regular speaker at insurance industry conferences, including the ALI CLE Conference on Life Insurance Company Products and the IRI ACTION18 Conference.
