Copernico Capital Partners, an investment manager focused on Latin America, has re-launched its opportunistic fund, Copernico Argentina Fund.
The fund will use an opportunistic investment strategy focused on Argentine assets at a time of transition.
The original fund was a limited life fund launched in February 2003, shortly after the devaluation of the Argentine peso, to take advantage of recovery opportunities. The fund was closed to new investors in 2004 due to capacity constraints and began returning money to investors in 2006 as the investment opportunities diminished.
The re-launched fund aims to repeat the same single-country focused investment strategy, in this case with the intent of capturing the combination of favourable macroeconomic conditions affecting Argentina, attractive valuations and a catalyst for re-pricing provided by the changing political environment preceding the upcoming elections in 2011.
The fund will make both event driven and value oriented investments, using a combination of sovereign and corporate bonds, equities and currency trades.
Copernico Argentina Fund is an open-ended fund, with quarterly redemptions. It was launched in May with seed capital from several regional investors, and Copernico plans on taking in additional capital until the fund reaches USD100m, at which point it will be closed to additional investors.
